We have met the enemy and he is us

 Tide's Inn
Back to Full Blog

A significant part of our anniversary celebration was a couple of days at Tide's Inn in Irvington, Virginia. Our first time even coming within miles of “5 star luxury”. A gift from one of our sons. And from another son, meals there. Champagne and chocolate covered strawberries from one of our daughters.

5 star luxury is great. The service certainly was 5 star. They come in and turn down the bed for you before nighty-nights! Our room looked out on sunrise on a tributary of the Rappahannock and the Miss Ann. Even had a rain shower with a window that looks out on the river. Beautiful room, beautiful view, beautiful weather, beautiful sunrises.

The stay included a voyage on the Miss Ann. A 127 foot yacht vintage 1927. An hour “at sea” across the Rappahannock over to Urbanna to wander the town and get lunch and then an hour back. It is called the “whiskey run” because back in the days when the stuff was prohibited, residents could go over to Urbanna and pick enough for the evening. Miss Ann is being sold to be a tour boat on the Potomac in Washington. Apparently upkeep is too much. In fact, after being recently rebuilt, the port engine died just as Miss Ann was coming up to the pier. The captain manuevered her alongside with just one screw just as smooth as butter anyway. A beautiful boat even though she is getting a little long in the tooth. Do boats get long in the tooth as the decades slip by, I ask you? When I win the lottery, think I might buy her and cruise the Bay. Or even run over to the Med and Monaco to see the Prince.

Do you have any idea how much meals cost at a 5 star luxury resort? Or how good they are? You have not had a lamb ribeye until you get it at a fine dining establishment. Or a breakfast buffet. Other than what my Miss Ann makes in our kitchen, the best.

Tide's Inn has a nice pool with a snack bar beside it. I did a few laps while my Miss Ann had a grouper sandwich. A thunder storm blew in so we sat under the awning and watched the fireworks show pass by. Delightful afternoon. Some other nice folks were there and we discussed the state of the universe. He is a computer type so, of course, a wise and intelligent man.

And champagne, also. With choclate covered strawberries. Does that make it 6 star luxury?

It all was a perfect anniversary gift. Try it, you'll like it.

And the celebrations are not done, yet. More to come.

Need to link to a couple of things that came during our separation from our computer.

This one came from my Cousin Charles. You may have seen it before but it is well worth seeing again if you did. http://www.greatdanepro.com/Blue%20Bueaty/index.htm

And this one from the guy who also sends me political junk and whom I have not told off yet:http://www.electricoyster.com/electric3d/index.html When I win the lottery, need to get an airplane, also.

sinann:

If you are going to celebrate, you might as well do it in grand style; and apparently you did.

The Miss Ann was neat, Ron. When you come to D.C., try to fit in the Sequoia (the Presidential yacht). And if Miss Ann is operational, cruise the Potomac. But in D.C. there is so much to see. We spent several hours a week or so ago in the American Art and the Portrait Museum, until our feet and knees gave out, and saw just a small part. When you come, plan on enough time to see everything.

And when you come, let's see if we can schedule some vis a vis.

It was delicious, Indian. But the meal, salad, main course, dessert, came to over $130. The wine was extra. Whew. The dining room was full, however. There must be a bunch of folks who can do that kind of thing.

Truly great kids, Curious. Did not do much in my life that can be classified as a real success, but those kids are something to be proud of. Evolution is alive and well.

If it was up to me, it would have been the Exmore Diner, Explorer. The kids do know how to do it right in 21st Century style, however. They are the ones with taste and styule.

ps. As I said in my "Trip Back" post, Explorer, the difference between city life and Eastern Shore life is dramatic. Like the excitement but do like to get back. And back to having time to fuss in my garden and do blogging.

Thanks Chief One Oar - aka "Both Oars Not in Water". You must be from the same tribe as I am. My Indian name is Ch.ief Dirty Water - aka "Using T**d for a Paddle".

We defiinitely deserve getting spoiled once every fifty years. Would like more but do not deserve it.
