We have met the enemy and he is us

 Political lies.
Back to Full Blog

I received an email the other day. From an elderly gentleman who had been on one of the ships I was on. Before me but part of a web ring that includes me. Receive a couple of forwards a day from him. Most of them pretty amusing.

This particular one, however, was offensive enough to require a comment. It had a cartoon drawing of Barack Obama. Not worthy of the honor of showing again. Along with the cartoon, it said. “White House, This has got to go.” And attributed to the ACLU – anti-christian lawyers union – jihad with a degree. And underneath it said “Then the Bible – remember when I was sworn in as a Senator – I used the Quran – Then the flag - remember I won't salute it – Then the Pledge of Allegiance – remember I won't say it – Vote for a change – Vote Deomocratic”. Do not know what Deomocratic is.

Frequently I comment on the spectacular things humans do with their brains. But, also frequently, I comment on how absolutely dumb humans can be. Anyone who watches the news has seen that all of these allegations are not true. Blatant and outright lies. Lower than snail slime. How anyone can circulate them or believe them is beyond any reason or morality.

The question is, what should I do? After a day, I have done only the making of this blog post. Thought about blocking any more emails from the sender. Thought about sending him an email with my thoughts. That would probably get me off his list. But most of the other stuff I get from him I enjoy and do not want to cut off. In the great balance of good and evil, am I throwing the baby out with the bath water?

And then there is the Honor Code. I will not lie nor cheat nor steal nor tolerate those that do. Sounds like he goes.

What say you?

sinann:

According to the latest survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, 12% say Obama is Muslim, virtually unchanged from 10% in March. In spite of all the media reporting that Obama is not a Muslim but a Christian, the number of Americans who believe he is a Muslim actually increased from March to July. Go figure!

Sinann,

does honor cut both ways? (me thinking outloud here)

Since I am sure he knows your stance on the world, don't you think he should honor you and not send you this sort of email?

Does not blocking him mean that you are honoring him? I am not sure.

I get emails and listserve from both sides of the aisle. I get the the pro-gay stuff and the anti-gay stuff; I get the pro-Bush stuff and anti-Bush stuff. I have books in my library from both liberal and conservative perspectives on many issues.

I feel that I can't 'argue with the enemy' if I don't know the enemy is saying...

An old high school friend sends all kinds of stuff - some with which I agree - others not; but I don't block him.
I respond only to those that make sense (to me); & I think he gets the point, with less of the ridiculous, radical stuff showing up.

I had a similar situation a few months back. A friend sent a "battle of the sexes" type cartoon that was more a vicious tirade against women and not the least funny.

I wrote and told him I didn't find it funny and felt it crossed the line.

He didn't reply to my comment and his jokes keep coming and none, so far, have been offensive.

So far, have done nothing, Explorer. Got a pretty funny one from him today just about when I was ready to tell him my thoughts. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

The more I think about it and read comments, Curious, the more likely I am to just wait. Got a good one from him today just to make the decision harder.

Think that most of this could not possibly be due to any reasoning brain activity, Whit. So the facts are meaningless to them.

Sinann...Ask yourself why he sent it to you...

To inform you of something he found...
To tell you he subscribes to this nonsense...
To upset you...
To show you something he came across but does not subscribe to it...

then why ???????

The answer to this question should answer your question....

Remember most everything negative about Obama is published by the
R.N.C. or supporters thereof...and Polls don't mean crap..they can
be manipulated to get whatever results the pollster is seeking....

Could be you just need to inform your friend of the facts and
raise his education about a subject he seems to know very little about...and at the same time explain to him your position and the
code........then you could have the outcome you think you want....

Good point, TAB. It turns out to be a more complex issue than my limited neurons detected when I first started. Have received some sort of similar emails since then. Digging up Jane Fonda's trip to Hanoi, for example. Received some that made me chuckle, too. Like the one I am posting today.

So far, it has, by default, stayed at doing nothing. He is expressing himself and has every right to do so. Like scum TV programs, turn it off for the moment. Still bothers me, however. I am tolerating those that spread lies.
