On this date in 1998, one Leonard Franklin Slye, known to one and all as Roy Rogers died. When I was in my formative years - still am according to some - my cowboy heroes were Roy, Sunset Carson, and fightin' Bob Steele. Include Roy even though he sang and fooled around with women. Could not include Gene. He just was not the man Roy was. And no one could keep up with fightin' Bob Steele. No singin', no women, just lots of fightin'

I don't know that Fightin' Bob Steele was a good role model for impressionable young men. Some great old clips there, but how did the Dean Martin one get in there?
Roy Rogers at one time, Rin-Tin-Tin with those Royal Canadians at another. Definitely a different time when the west was squeeky clean, hair was always in place and the bad guys spoke with a scowl. Oh, the many times that horse lifted Roy off the ground and out of danger. and the skill Trigger had in communicating pawing at the ground and vocalizing.
Roy Rogers - one of the popular Hollywood good guys. We had two movie houses in my first hometown. Every Saturday afternoon one showed cowboy shows - the other - something more like Shirley Temple films. Today things are achangin'!

Lewisburg had two, too, Curious. My high school money making job was as an usher at the Campus, the big theatre on Market Street, at night. But on Saturday afternoon, I was the manager at the Roxy, down on Third, behind Prowant's Men's Store. It was the dirty one that charged fifteen cents for matinees, had all the serials, and the film always broke. But they had the westerns. Loved them. Gave me the morality of my teenage years.

Wasn't it neat, Gecko, to always know who the good guys and bad guys are? In these days of political campaigns, wish we could do that. But wait, maybe we can. They are all bad guys.

I didn't have much acquaintance with Roy Rogers growing up in the 50s. we didn't get a TV until '57.
