We have met the enemy and he is us

 Les Paul and Mary Ford
Back to Full Blog

Happy Birthday to U.S., Happy Birthday to U.S., Happy Birthday to U.S., Happy Birthday to U.S.

Last night, PBS had one of their specials. this one on Les Paul and all of his accomplishments. The solid body electric guitar, reverb, multitrack recording, overdubbing. Not to mention being a truly spectacular guitar player and entertainer. Those were the good ol' days. How well I remember.

Les & Mary

Mary died in 1977 from diabetes. Les is apparently still alive and appearing at the Iridium in New York every Monday - at 93. Raise a glass to a great musician, inventor, pioneer, Les Paul.

sinann:

Les Paul really added sweetness to "Sweet Georgia Brown", my favorite of his.

You really got some videos of their early days.

Back when Irving Wallace and his son and daughter were doing THE BOOKS OF LISTS (multiple volumes) Chet Atkins made a list of the ten most influential guitarists in history. Django Reinhardt was at the top, but Les Paul was up there too. (Chet ranked himself fifth, BTW--and his two greatest influences were Les Paul and Merle Travis.) Great post, Sid. Thanks!

Watching the PBS show about him reinforced the admiration based on both his inventions and guitar skills, Whit. Great music.

Need to listen to some of the Django Reinhardt music, Fairweather. If he is that much better than Les and Chet, he must be something.
