We have met the enemy and he is us

 Persistence of Life
Back to Full Blog

Fussing around outside is one of the things that make retirement enjoyable. Depending on the weather, spending some time each morning and afternoon in the yard and garden. Gardening is not a real description of what gets done, fussing around is better. And it is one of my religious experiences, an epiphany.

And the message frequently is the persistence of life. Another word for weeds. See my Spring post and Neuton mower. Any time there is an available little patch, something grows in it. 99% of the time it is not something that belongs there – a weed. There are a couple of these &^%($ things that are particularly persistent. Like what I call wiregrass. It puts out rootlets that spread underground. Like under the geraniums, under the hardware cloth, under the rocks in the driveway, under everything where you can not attack it vigorously. And it does this on purpose. Because it hates me. And is tougher and meaner than I am.

Scientific American and National Geographic every so often have articles on difficult places where life comes up, or comes from. Volcanic vents in the ocean, Death Valley, Antarctica, Mars. Life is truly persistent.

And when the real threats to humanity, the possibility of eliminating 90 % of all of the species on Earth (which has happened before several times) or to even eliminate the whole planet, come from Mother Nature, will humanity persist? Are we the “weeds”?

Wiregrass, sinann ! We have something similar - knapweed - though I'm convinced its ugly behavior is nothing personal.
It's just plain evil, wanting to take over the entire world!
It'll undermine other plants & grow anywhere.

That wiregrass comment was just way too funny, sinann!

I'm sure I've got a lot of that here too.

The harder I try, the worse it gets, Explorer. Do you think when we have eliminated ourselves, the wiregrass will become the dominant species?

Truely evil, Curious. Put on the Earth just to remind us of our mortality.

Sinnan:

When I mowed earlier in the week, I noticed that the wire/crab grass was the only thing happy and healthy beneath the sun and it's 100 Texas degree heat(aside from the fire ants I mentioned b4)...I think that root system gets it's water from the reservoir across town! Pop'

Lived in Midland for five delightful years, Pop. God certainly did not intend for grass to grow in West-by-Gawd Texas, even wiregrass. Had a token grass spot in front but had cactus and sage in a beautiful backyard garden.

almost everything that grows in this Niqually prairie soil seems to creep along underground and pops up here and there and everywhere.. The grass and ferns have unbelievable root systems. And I have a Quaking Aspen tree that would take over the world if left unchecked. From the large mother tree, it spreads out in all directions and pops up all over the place, hundreds of feet from mother tree.. I have to dig down and prune those roots every year. But the tree never stops trying to spread.

Didn't they make a movie about that? I swear I saw one a few nights ago on one of those wierd channels. Maybe I was just having night mares about the wire grass.

And I will bet on the wiregrass, Joe. At any rate, I will not be among the winners.
