We have met the enemy and he is us

 Cyd Charisse, Jeanette MacDonald
Back to Full Blog

A couple of my youthful favorites came to attention today. Jeanette MacDonald (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanette_MacDonald) was born on this day in 1901 and Cyd Charisse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyd_Charisse) passed of a heart attack. Here is to the two of them. Loved the old Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald movies and her voice. And who could not love Cyd Charisse.

Waste a few minutes and watch and listen to the majesty.

Some old memories there. Cyd Charisse was only 5'6" tall, but those long, shapely legs made her look taller. I like what was said about her in this review:

"Cyd Charisse had the most eloquent legs in show business. While other actresses struggled with the Method or hack dialogue, Charisse's legs possessed a range of expression and vocabulary that went beyond Funk&Wagnall's dictionary. When teamed with Fred Astaire in The Band Wagon, she rivalled and even surpassed his fluidity and elegance...and [with Gene Kelly] Charisse stole scenes with ease, goading Kelly's musclebound legs with one cool kick of her silk-clad limbs."

My brother used to say he never saw the point to movie musicals with dancing. I believe it was Cyd Charisse and those fantastic legs that brought him to his senses. Thanks for sharing.

Si.
Although cyd was a most beautiful dancer, with the longest legs.. She could not sing worth beans.. Most of her singing in musical appearances was dubbed.. by India Adams.

These were the pre-TV days. We could all dream about Cyd and Ricardo. What do we dream about these days? All My Children, Swingtown? How about CSI?

Right, Pockets, as always. Always watch Singin' in the Rain every time it comes on.

But then, neither can I, Hawk. But the dancing told the whole thing. She did not need to sing.

And your dreams, too, Pop. Are you going to tell us your dreams? Maybe better not.

You can't have a tribute to Jeanette MacDonald without this--

If I remember correctly, Explorer, they had a thing going. Or is the correct terminology, they had their things going. If I was Nelson Eddy, I would have turned around and warmed her cozy little cabin.
