We have met the enemy and he is us

 Slow servers
Back to Full Blog

My 'puter at home is just an old Dell Optiplex with only a couple of gigawhizzes. Everything runs slow. I play a lot of spider solitaire waiting for stuff to come up on the screen. Visiting my daughter's home and using her whizbang computer, it is VERY obvious when something is slow. And blogstream is slow. Still play spider. Someone wrote a blog posting a while ago but could not find it to give it a refernce. I have a mirror blog on blogger (http://sinannblog.blogspot.com/) and it loads up considerably faster than blogstream.

Appreciate the fact that we are pretty much getting something for nothing. Blogstream gives us a nice service and we do not pay a plugged nickel for it. If all the blogging sites charged something, would pay as long as it is not much. Blogging is enough of a joy to be worth it. We get TV shows for nothing except the pain of watching really stupid efforts to rip us off. Blogstream's ads could be a lot worse.

But the fact is still there. Blogstream is slow. Two minutes for a page to load is really slow.

p.s. The blog post that I referred to above is in Whit's comment below. Thanks, Whit.

S,

I find the 'slow' issue to be very inconsistent - some mornings it is very slow - then it suddely speeds up... I read the newspaper while waiting for it to come up. I have found closing some of the windows seems to help - not THOSE windows, Harry

I;m glad its not only me that has this trouble. It seems like it takes forever here. Course I play my hearts while waiting,so I guess I just need to learn to be patient. Have a nice day Sinnan.

You are not alone on this. There have been times when it seemed forever to move from one place to another on Blogstream.
Maybe they're listening today. At the moment - there's quick action!

Today I had one of those "Website is Not responding" messages when trying to access blogstream.

Seems to be worse in the morning for some reason.

Sinann....your dell has one 128K memory board unless you have upgraded it...It has room for two memory slots....you can get them at Circuit City or most high end electronics stores...they are about 69.00 for a 256K board...replace the one you have with a 256 and add another 256 and that bird will fly......I have the same thing....

just remove the cover, and you will see the memory card..it has a snap
holder to release it..pop it out...go to the store...tell them you want more memory....snap em in...and your good to go....

sinann:

I wrote a post earlier this month on the slowness of Blogstream. Here it is.

Blogstream Is a Slow-Moving Stream

I have noticed a significant slowdown recently in navigating Blogstream. A few weeks ago, the difficult times for navigation were early in the morning and late in the afternoon when more bloggers were online. Now I am experiencing difficulty at all hours of the day. My new computer is lightning fast on all websites except Blogstream. Sometimes it takes me 10 minutes to do what I should be able to do in less than a minute. Blogstream is not user friendly, and as a result I am getting extremely frustrated. This morning when I went to Pencil Louie’s blog titled “The Niche”, I noted that he had this to say about Blogstream:

Is it just me, or is this the slowest site on the entire Internet? I run a 6 gig DSL connection, using IE7 with Maxthon2 browser and a pretty beefy computer and I have no troubles anywhere except here. It is like using a 14.5 K baud dial-up modem on a shared telephone party line. Good Lord, this is 2008, not 1985.

I went to Yahoo! Answers with this question : Why is my internet connection so slow on some sites? These were the answers:

1. Sometimes it's down due to their hardware and network connection. I worked for a company which had a site supporting around 250,000 users and it only had a 4meg internet connection!

2. There are three main reasons.
-You have dial-up
-The server is filled up with a lot of people
-The server is cheap which makes it slow.

Well, I am on high-speed cable, so the problem apparently is related to too many people being accommodated by an overwhelmed server. I enjoy the community of Blogstream, but my frustration occasionally reaches the breaking point.

Glad you added this, Whit. I remembered it and wanted to refer to it but did not look hard enough. You are my inspiration!

Should have done this years ago, TAB. But the Optiplex was so much better than the old HP I had before. Now it has some other issues. Started a year or so ago when we had a short power fart and it went into power saving mode. Did not know about this and had heart palpitations when pushing the damned button would not do anything, A friend said unplug for a minute and light her off (old Navy term for starting up). Worked OK. Happened again a couple of times and it had to sit for eight hours and hit the damned button several times before it would work. Got a battery backup and surge protector - which everyone needs to have. But there are still times when the power really goes off and it takes a bunch of tries to get it to light off. Got a Shuttle at a good bargain and have the two networked and saved all my pictures to disks because I know it will poop out completely sometime soon.

Got accustomed to the good old dial-up days, Pop. Long waits for something to download seems normal. But they do need to upgrade their servers.

Did not see it until the late night news, Fairweather. Thanks for the concern. They did not get to The Eastern Shore. We are in the D.C. area at the moment visiting a daughter so did not experience those storms. We have a son in Norfolk, however, who was about to drive home at that time. Happened to be talking to him on the 'phone at that very moment and he made no mention of it.

As blogstream gets more subscribers, they have not kept up. Maybe a good way to solve the problem is to get people so ticked off that they go to another blog service.

That is just what I noted, Curious. Decided to finally vent. Thanks for listening.

Just what I thought, Indian. Did not know it was not my system until using this really good one my daughter has.

Very true, Fairweather. It is always fair weather when good friends get together.

In my old Optiplex, that was very true. It objected to open windows. That was part of the reason I did not know that the blogstream sytem was a factor. Got in the habit of playing spider and it is habit forming.

SINANN: HELLO. THANK YOU and ALL above for RESTORING what's left of T.P.' sanity.

MAYBE the National Intelligence folks are MONITORING this site for NUT CASES like OLD GRUMPY TallPockets???

Oh well .... such is life, my friend. WINK.

My BEST to you and yours,

The SLOWEST of the SLOW to ya' .... GRIN.

TallPockets.
