 Neighbors

There are some neat things in this world. Having good neighbors is one of them.

There is a nice house next to us that had been used for rental for a while and then on the market for a while. Several nice families lived there while it was being rented. About a year ago Hank and Harriet bought it. Have not asked their permission so I am using pseudonames. He is a crane operator and works most of the time in the Norfolk vicinty. About an hour and a half drive and a seventeen dollar round trip Bridge-Tunnel toll fee. She is a teacher's assistant and works in Norfolk, also. They have a great young daughter, Hannah. Hank is also a pastor at a Baptist church up the road a piece.

First of all, they are just plain nice people. Friendly, well spoken, considerate, outgoing. Good neighbors. And Hank must be a great pastor. He is always going to see his church members or to the hospital, etc.

Hank likes crabs. Chesapeake Bay blue crabs. He gets them a bushel at a time down at the dock near his church. And he shares. And they are goooood big fat crabs. Now, you can not beat that for being a good guy.

We like to go to The Big City as often as our kids will put up with us. Sometimes events work out so that we are gone for a couple of weeks. My battery powered Neuton mower is great but when the grass on my 0.41 acre lot gets tall and tough, it struggles a little. Last couple of times, Hank mowed my lawn with his riding mower while we were gone. What do you think of that, blogging buddies?

What brought this post to mind is that our 15 year old Grand Marquis is leaking. Don't we all? And Wade up to your F and your G Garage up to Onley says it is either a little hose up on the very front of the engine or the mainfold that it connects to. $300 to $1000, oh dear, oh double dear. Ford Motors used a plastic manifold that has been troublesome. Not one of those repair situations where we sit in the waiting room and read Field and Stream or Motor Week and wait. F & G has a good waiting room and a clean bathroom but there are limits. And this one could take a couple of days. To get to the point, Onley is about 15 miles away and the Eastern Shore is not big on mass transit. Hank and Harriet were going out of town and they gave us the key to Hank's going-to-work car to use so I could carry the Grand Marquis up to Onley and the B.W. drive me back. And then vice versa to get it back. Hank's very own special little red Chevy. That is neighborliness.

Last summer, before he had become the pastor of his present church, Hank and Harriet had a back yard barbecue for some of the members of their previous Baptist church. A bunch of people attended. Hank also asked us and some other neighbors. Hank and Harriet are black and their church is a black church. Other than us, everyone at the barbecue was black. It did not bother us but it seemed to bother some of the members. Learned later that Hank and Harriet got some flack about getting a house with white neighbors and inviting white folks to the barbecue. Did not deter them from inviting us again this summer, however (we were out of town so could not attend but would have). Nice to know that your neighbors are not racist. Makes them something special.

Having nice neighbors is neat.

 Governmentium

In my last post, agonized over the guilt of not telling off an emailer who sent me slimey political falsehoods. Still agonizing. As I told TAB in response to his comment, by default, am doing nothing by putting off responding.

He did send me one that tickled my chemistry teacher's funny bone. Always like getting my funny bone tickled. At my age, that is a big whoop.

Governmentium

Research has led to the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (Gv), has one neuron, 25 assistant neurons, 88 deputy neurons, and 198 assistant deputy neurons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it can be detected, because it impedes every action with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second to take from four days to four years to complete.

Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2-6 years; it does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neurons and deputy neurons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium' s mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neurons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass. When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

Just as predicted by Peter Principle and one I heard before and that I thought was called Peterson's Hypothesis but could not find. Let's call is Sinann's Antiprinciple. It says that any governmental office or organization will expand, require funding, and occupy office space to the point at which it becomes completely bloated and inefficient. At that point it divides and spawns multiple copies.

 Political lies.

I received an email the other day. From an elderly gentleman who had been on one of the ships I was on. Before me but part of a web ring that includes me. Receive a couple of forwards a day from him. Most of them pretty amusing.

This particular one, however, was offensive enough to require a comment. It had a cartoon drawing of Barack Obama. Not worthy of the honor of showing again. Along with the cartoon, it said. “White House, This has got to go.” And attributed to the ACLU – anti-christian lawyers union – jihad with a degree. And underneath it said “Then the Bible – remember when I was sworn in as a Senator – I used the Quran – Then the flag - remember I won't salute it – Then the Pledge of Allegiance – remember I won't say it – Vote for a change – Vote Deomocratic”. Do not know what Deomocratic is.

Frequently I comment on the spectacular things humans do with their brains. But, also frequently, I comment on how absolutely dumb humans can be. Anyone who watches the news has seen that all of these allegations are not true. Blatant and outright lies. Lower than snail slime. How anyone can circulate them or believe them is beyond any reason or morality.

The question is, what should I do? After a day, I have done only the making of this blog post. Thought about blocking any more emails from the sender. Thought about sending him an email with my thoughts. That would probably get me off his list. But most of the other stuff I get from him I enjoy and do not want to cut off. In the great balance of good and evil, am I throwing the baby out with the bath water?

And then there is the Honor Code. I will not lie nor cheat nor steal nor tolerate those that do. Sounds like he goes.

What say you?

 Kay Starr

Thanks to “On This Day in History” widget on my iGoogle home page (recommend iGoogle), found that on this date in 1922, Kay Starr was born. It was truly during my junior high and high school days that Kay Starr was popular. And it looks as if she was still performing in 1999.

Anyway, here is to Miss Kay Starr. Back when music was good and high school was fun.

There was one of Kay singing this on Wayne Newton's show but this is better:

This is a classic:

Hard to find videos. Here is a 1949 one:

Here is one from 1954. The year I graduated from Lewisburg Joint High School. Great close dancing music:

Touring with Frankie Laine is 1986:

Kay Starr

A glass of wine for Miss Kay Starr.
